Sustainable hair washing: solid shampoo bars vs. soap bars

Hair washing without plastic waste: The environmentally friendly alternatives differ in solid shampoos and soap bars. Both do not require plastic packaging and help reduce plastic waste.
Haarseifen oder feste Shampoos?

As a dry block that does not require a tube or bottle of plastic, solid shampoo at first glance has a great advantage for improving the environmental situation. However, their use can be dangerous for human health: They usually contain high amounts of sulfates - significantly more than liquid shampoos (sometimes more than 90%).

The acceptability of such artificial surfactants has often been discussed in recent years. Recent studies show that SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) and SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) in shampoos can cause hair loss, irritation of the scalp or dandruff. Various sources of naturopathy indicate the dangers of SLS for skin, eyes, and hair. Furthermore, some even argue that SLS could cause cancer throughout the body.

Although scientific studies do not explicitly call the SLS a carcinogen, sulfates are currently criticized on the Internet, so that more and more people want sulfate-free shampoo.

Are Shampoo Bars without SLS better for the scalp?

Multiple shampoo manufacturers began to look for alternative surfactants that could have higher consumer acceptance. As a result, the number of surfactants used has risen sharply in recent years. However, many of the alternatives are produced using similar methods or ingredients to SLS and SLES. Due to the modified production, however, they may be labeled with other names in the INCI. Sometimes even simple synonyms are used for SLS and SLES. So even more conscious consumers can hardly identify the aggressive surfactants.

Vegetable oils in shampoos: attractive but ineffective.

As a marketing technic for shampoos, the focus is not on the surfactant used. Instead, manufacturers often add vegetable oils drop by drop and advertise this on the packaging. However, this has no advantage at all for hair and scalp: the surfactant combines with water and fat molecules when washed so that the caring oil cannot reach the hair at all.

The only effect that the vegetable oils in shampoos have is a reduction in washing power: since part of the surfactant has already combined with the oil it contains, it now absorbs less fat from the hair. Also, every vegetable oil has the same effects - even when most products often contain rare and expensive variants, such as argan oil.

Notwithstanding, vegetable oils have many advantages for the appearance and health of the hair. They only have to stay in contact with the hair for a certain time. Read more...

Only Central Europe there are about 50 plant families that produce toxins. The castor-oil plant (Ricinus communis) is very highly toxic and was therefore chosen as the poisonous plant of the year 2018 in Germany. The poison ricin is mainly concentrated in the seed coat. At the same time, the castor oil pressed from the seeds is also appreciated as a natural laxative. In the production of castor oil, therefore, any ricin present must be destroyed by heating.

shampoo bar: wash hair like in the olden days - without any questionable ingredients

Our shampoo soaps are handmade natural soaps. They consist exclusively of selected vegetable oils and lye and are produced in the traditional cold process. This takes a lot of time - but no complex chemical transformations are needed. Before they find their way into the shower, our soaps must mature for at least 4 weeks. During this time they lose a large part of the water added during production and their pH value stabilizes. Thanks to our special mixture of six vegetable oils, our shampoo bars foam well and do not need any exotic additives to leave the hair clean and well-groomed.

Are shampoo bars always better than liquid and solid shampoos? What should you keep in mind when shopping?

Buy any soap is not a safe solution for those who want to switch to natural hair care. In large beauty chains, shampoo bars are available but contain artificial ingredients and are made from finished soap flakes. An attentive look at the list of contents is useful when buying your soap. Especially if you are looking for vegan shampoos in solid form, you should pay attention: The most commonly used soap flakes consist of palm oil or beef tallow.

Caution: shampoo bars are not always a sulfate-free alternative to liquid shampoo. Various manufacturers also add sulfates to the formulation here!

Why are shampoo bars gentle on the scalp? Why can they help against dandruff and hair loss?

Our Natural soap bars retain the natural proportion of glycerine, which is inherent in vegetable oils, due to the cold process production. Also, the oils are not completely saponified by the caustic solution and thus have a superfat effect to a certain extent. This "superfat degree" of 3% makes our shampoo bars gentler on the scalp compared to other products. They can also help against hair loss and dandruff. A real powerhouse against these problems is our formula with essential rosemary oil and nettle leaves. These two substances have been used for centuries as natural care products for beautiful and healthy hair.

Clean hair and healthy scalp - only thanks to vegetable oils

Vegetable oils are effective ingredients that bring various health benefits. They are increasingly found in cosmetic products. Each vegetable oil consists of certain fatty acids and other components, which only partially survive the saponification process (unsaponifiable portion). Read more...

In cosmetic articles, a balanced mixture of vegetable oils can be much more effective than artificial substances. In conventional cosmetics, however, they are usually only used "out of fashion". Argan or rosehip oil, for example, flow drop by drop into a wide variety of cosmetics without showing any effect. In our formula, we do not use any valuable ingredient if it does not affect the end product.

Are our shampoo bars a better alternative for the environment?

As described above, our natural soap needs only vegetable oils and lye, which are won in clean, handicraft processes. All ingredients are completely biodegradable and safe for the environment. In contrast to artificial surfactants, saponified oils do not damage aquatic organisms when they end up in wastewater. As convinced animal lovers, we do not use any animal ingredients. We want to reduce the negative effects of hair care on people and the environment wherever we can.

For example, shampoo bars cause less CO2 emissions than liquid shampoos simply because of their compact form: liquid shampoos consist of approx. 75% of water, which consumes unnecessary space during transport. We also attach great importance to sustainability when it comes to packaging: wrapped in stone paper and jute, our soaps leave no trace. Stone paper is a green alternative to conventional paper, which requires no wood, no chlorine and less water for production. In the small jute bag, our soaps are robust, beautifully packaged and environmentally friendly.
